Word comes from a Drawer B commenter that Crystal Castles “borrowed” a lot of their sounds from the Chiptune community (Lo-bat in particular) and apparently also appropriated the image of Madonna with a black eye from an uncredited artist.
“Crystal Castles has been getting a lot press using the image of getting sounds nobody [...]

The Whitburn Project - an analysis
May 15th, 2008 · No Comments
For the last ten years, obsessive record collectors in Usenet have been working on the Whitburn Project — a huge undertaking to preserve and share high-quality recordings of every popular song since the 1890s. To assist their efforts, they’ve created a spreadsheet of 37,000 songs and 112 columns of raw data, including each song’s duration, [...]

A Taste of the new Tricky

From the album ‘Knowle West Boy’ due in September on these fair shores. There’s a remix contest, too. Everybody’s got a remix contest these days, don’t they. Crowdsourcing the remix is so 2008.

May 12th, 2008 · No Comments
Hot on the heels of Muxtape comes a single serving solution to the perennial question “what are you listening to…” It’s as easy as posting a twitter update, or so they say and the music is sourced from songza, et al. so there’s no uploading. If you want to know more, read this.

The weather didn’t at all cooperate with Radiohead’s fans last night and they’re sharing their horrific experiences online today.
Some folks didn’t even make it inside.
Pasta Primavera’s got an amazing photo from the parking lot.
Others probably wish they hadn’t…

Seems I’m not the only one curious about the AT&T Commercial that sounds an awful lot like someone covering that Beta Band song “Squares.” Kevmo did the hard work and dug up the original track from the ’70s group Wallace Collection. Thanks, Kev!

A Million Little Decisions
May 12th, 2008 · No Comments
Andrew Bird’s blog over at the New York Times discusses the recording process and all of the myriad decisions made that eventually “make a song.”
We discuss a lot of things to help us get the songs just right — like not hitting cymbals because the crashes can be “cheap thrills.” Instead we favored the dark, [...]
Kills Video Goodness for a Rainy Monday
May 12th, 2008 · No Comments
New video from The Kills, Last Day Of Magic. Something about The Kills really appeals to me, but I also tend to lose interest pretty quickly. I have/had the same problem with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Love of Diagrams to some extent.

Scarlett Johansson “Falling Down” video
May 1st, 2008 · 2 Comments
I’ve been reading some ho-hum impressions of Scarlett Johansson’s debut single, “Falling Down”, and, after listening myself, I must say I’m sort of surprised by the complaints. It’s nowhere near as meh as people are saying. I was expecting it to be horrible based on some of the hyperbolic headlines. Granted, it’s not great. It’s [...]

What are you listening to - April 08?
April 30th, 2008 · 2 Comments
Yesterday, a friend asked what I had been listening to lately. My mind went blank. We had discussed Crystal Castles earlier, but I couldn’t think of anything else. Of course, it wasn’t for lack of listening that I couldn’t name anyone in particular. I listen to music all the time. [...]

Summer Sounds: The Explorers Club

Ready for Summer? Apparently Summerville, South Carolina is a good place to start. Check out the retro summer sounds of The Explorers Club. “The band draws on the soul-satisfying vocal style made famous by the Beach Boys and the Association, and pairs it with arrangements patented by the likes of Phil Spector, the [...]

Anyone Seen My $4.2 Billion?
April 23rd, 2008 · No Comments
Chuck Klosterman tells it like it is.
“People didn’t stop buying albums because they were philosophically opposed to how the rock business operated, and they didn’t stop buying albums because the Internet is changing the relationship between capitalism and art. People stopped buying albums because they wanted the fucking money. It’s complicated, but it’s not.”
