Davy Jones, the lead singer of The Monkees died today of a heart attack in Florida. He was 66. I was 12 when MTV ran insane marathons of reruns of The Monkees’ TV show, which I watched obsessively. No matter who actually played which instruments on the albums, the Head soundtrack is classic.

February 29th, 2012 · Comments Off on STREAM: Rocket Juice And The Moon “Hey Shooter (feat. Erykah Badu)”
Not sure how I missed this yesterday over at Stereogum, but the very bizarre “supergroup” comprised of Damon Albarn, Flea, and Tony Allen released the first taste of what its forthcoming full-length might sound like. And, contrary to what that absurd moniker might lead you to believe, it is not terrible. Not terrible at all. […]
February 29th, 2012 · Comments Off on VIDEO: Gorillaz (feat. Andre 3000 and James Murphy) “DoYaThing”
Jamie Hewlett’s CGI version of Gorillaz is kind of amazing. Best video I’ve seen in a long time. And Damon Albarn has penned another infectious jam. Throw in James Murphy and Andre 3000, and it’s even harder to resist. All in the name of Converse.
February 27th, 2012 · Comments Off on STREAM: The Magnetic Fields’ New Album ‘Love at the Bottom of the Sea’
Stephin Merritt likes synths again. Hallelujah. The band’s tenth studio album, Love at the Bottom of the Sea, is out next week via Merge.
February 27th, 2012 · Comments Off on Shades Designed by Beck
What’s Beck been up to the past few years besides not making new records? Designing sunglasses for Oliver Peoples, of course. Amazingly, these frames have been in development for two years with Beck being “very involved” in the process. Beck drew inspiration from his personal collection of dead stock 80’s sunglasses, which is why they […]
February 27th, 2012 · Comments Off on VIDEO: School of Seven Bells “Lafaye”
I’ve been sort of ho-hum on School of Seven Bells until their recent output put me over the edge. Now I’m a full-fledged fan. Sirius XMU has been steadily spinning “The Night,” which was the first track of theirs to prick up my ears. The video for the first official single, “Lafaye,” was shot in […]
February 27th, 2012 · Comments Off on STREAM: Arctic Monkeys “R U Mine?”
New Arctic Monkeys song. Harkens back to the stoner-rock vibe of Humbug. As Pitchfork pointed out, it’s not on their current LP, Suck It and See, nor is from any sort of impending release. Just a random one-off. I’ll take it. If you fancy it enough to own it, download from iTunes.
February 24th, 2012 · Comments Off on STREAM: First New PIL Recording in 20 Years
John Lydon doesn’t give a rats ass about credibility or legacies or selling out. He’s in this game for his own amusement. Hence, the multiple ($$$) Sex Pistols reunions, the cringe-worthy butter commercials, and the even more cringe-worthy appearance on I’m a Celebrity Get Me out of Here. PIL was merely the only outlet left for Lydon to […]
February 24th, 2012 · Comments Off on Tour Dates a Probable Precursor to New Fiona Apple Album
Actual events are scheduled that lend credence to the news that Fiona Apple might have a new record nearing release. Ever since L.A. Reid recently tweeted a welcome back message to Fiona, news items have been trickling in. But now there are actual tour dates lined up. Still no concrete album news, but this is […]
February 24th, 2012 · Comments Off on VIDEO: The Drums “Days”
New single from one of my favorite records of last year. The Drums have an uncanny knack for creating catchy as hell earworms, as I keep returning to this album again and again. The video is a head-scratcher, though. It stars transgender model Amanda Lepore. It’s not a story so much as a slow pastiche […]
February 22nd, 2012 · Comments Off on Blur Live at the Brit Awards
Blur received a Brit award last night for “outstanding contribution to music.” The band played an 11-minute set consisting of career-spanning highlights (“Girls & Boys,” “Song 2,” “Parklife,” “Tender,” and my all-time favorite Blur song, “This Is A Low”). Having just played a few nights prior at the War Child benefit (see previous post), this […]

February 9th, 2012 · Comments Off on VIDEO: Madonna “Give Me All Your Luvin’ (Feat. M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj)”
A lot of people hatin’ on that Superbowl performance. Yeah, she was clearly miming, but I thought she was more entertaining than any performer for the past ten years save Prince. And I think her new single is beyond catchy.
February 9th, 2012 · Comments Off on VIDEO: The Magnetic Fields “Andrew in Drag”
Amazingly catchy new single from our favorite gay misanthrope, which is taken from the forthcoming Love at the Bottom of the Sea album. NSFW due to the nakedness.
