VIDEO: The Maccabees “Love You Better”

I enjoyed The Maccabees debut record, Colour It In, but there was an underlying sense that things could go awry in the future. Sort of like when you see someone with fat potential; might look alright now, but you know that two Thanksgivings later things will have likely taken a turn for the worse. For some reason when bands generate praise right off the bat they can’t help but start to take themselves seriously. Bloc Party bit off a huge helping of suck after the success of Silent Alarm by trying to become U2 with a set of songs that screamed self-importance and stadium friendliness. It’s a slippery slope and one that I’m afraid The Maccabees might be heading down, if its latest single, “Love You Better”, is any indication. Vocalist Orlando Weeks’ bellowing yelp is starting to sound like a put on. This song just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I think that taste is disappointment.

I think the production is the problem. I saw them do an acoustic set in a record store last week and this song in particular was really good. Wall of Arms isn’t as good as their debut by any stretch, but it isn’t horrible.

I still can’t get over how bad that Bloc Party follow up was in comparison to their debut. wtf.
