RETRO: The Cure “Siamese Twins” live with the Royal Ballet 1983
June 26th, 2007 · 1 Comment
Uhh, this is beyond bizarre. This is a live video of The Cure performing, perhaps, the most depressing of all of Robert Smith’s songs, “Siamese Twins”, from the equally chipper Pornography record, while the Royal Ballet dances on stage with them. Crazy.

Arctic Monkey Alex Turner fucks with the media, maybe
June 26th, 2007 · No Comments
Backstage at the Glastonbury Festival last weekend, Arctic Monkeys‘ singer/guitarist, Alex Turner, told the Mirror tabloid that he, Lily Allen, Dizzee Rascal, and the Klaxons’ James Righton have formed a supergroup. Now, given that it’s the Mirror and that Turner routinely takes the piss out of the media, the chances of this being true are [...]

The Verve to reform
June 26th, 2007 · No Comments
Not exactly earth shattering news, but A Northern Soul balladeers The Verve will regroup with its original line-up intact. I guess seven years is just about how long it takes for musicians to become fully humbled. Richard Ashcroft’s solo career didn’t exactly take off, but the official reason for the reformation is “for the joy [...]

Interpol vs. Editors
June 25th, 2007 · No Comments
I can understand hating a band. I hate plenty (hello Wilco, hello Flaming Lips). So, NME writer Mark Beaumont slags off Interpol with some pretty harsh words in a recent piece. Slagging off Interpol in and of itself is not a big deal. So Beaumont hates Interpol…who cares? But here’s the kicker: He loves Editors. [...]

The Cure lines up US tour, new album
June 25th, 2007 · No Comments
I just don’t know how to feel about Cure news at this point. For a band that started threatening to break up back in 1985, The Cure refuses to go away. When was the last great Cure record? 1989. That was almost 20 years ago. Not a good sign for things to come. The band’s [...]
Led Zeppelin to play memorial concert, possibly tour
June 25th, 2007 · 2 Comments
I’ll believe this when I see it, but, reportedly, the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin are in talks to perform at a memorial concert for Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun in London:
“And no-one can quite believe it, but during discussions about the concert they all gave the green light to a tour if it [...]
Bryan Ferry on Letterman tomorrow night
June 25th, 2007 · No Comments
Ferry’s new album of Bob Dylan covers, Dylanesque, which sounds much stranger than it actually is, comes out tomorrow, and he’s going to be in New York to perform on The Late Show with David Letterman. The following day he will be signing the new record at J&R Music World at 12:30 p.m.

Amy Winehouse sets up Fall tour, ignores South
June 25th, 2007 · No Comments
Since hyped British artists rarely make a dent stateside, it’s somewhat surprising that Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black has not only gone gold over here but has been hovering in the Top 10 for weeks now. More touring is a record company’s only strategy for the cusp of success. Winehouse is not exactly packing in [...]

Bonnaroo: Read the fine print
June 24th, 2007 · 2 Comments
After last year’s Bonnaroo, I swore I’d never return. Not because I didn’t see any good shows- I did. I saw some amazing shows. It was just that the place was a hot, filthy mess and swarming with hippies. Of course, I expected to see more than a few hippies at a hippie festival, but [...]

RETRO: Bauhaus “Transmission” live 08.07.2006
June 13th, 2007 · No Comments
Well, technically, this isn’t very retro, since it was recorded on Bauhaus‘ 2006 reunion tour, but since Bauhaus hasn’t put out a new record since 1983, we’re going to call it retro. Their cover of Joy Division’s “Transmission” is rock solid. Peter Murphy even does his best Ian Curtis impression [...]

Marilyn Manson "Heart Shaped Glasses"
June 13th, 2007 · 1 Comment
Marilyn Manson has never been accused of writing a good song; the man isn’t exactly famous for his tunes. But at least a few singles here and there over the years have had, you know, choruses and whatnot that were almost passably memorable. No such luck with his latest single, [...]

Icky Thump on USB drives
June 13th, 2007 · 1 Comment
For a guy who’s not too keen on internet savvy marketing, Jack White seems to be loosening up on the whole idea of music not produced on vinyl. That’s right, the new White Stripes record will be available on limited edition thumb drives. They will come in two versions, a cartoon Meg and a cartoon [...]

Beastie Boys tour dates
June 12th, 2007 · No Comments
The following dates will feature the Beastie Boys in their “traditional hip hop glory”, accoring to their press release; that is to say it will not be an all-instrumental set a la the new record, The Mix Up, out June 26. More intimate dates with a full band line-up are forthcoming. “More intimate” as in [...]

Big Radio freefall spawns last ditch effort to acknowledge that Internet thing
June 12th, 2007 · No Comments
It’s old news that iPods and podcasts and even Myspace have taken a huge bite out of corporate radio’s audience and influence. Now, in a last ditch effort to sustain some semblance of relevance, clusterfucky, Clear Channel type stations are embracing the Internet as a means of reaching out to listeners, but it may be [...]

Analyzing Bright Eyes’ recent New York stint, graphically
June 12th, 2007 · No Comments
On Sunday, The New York Times did a piece on Andrew Kuo, an obsessive blogger with a bizarre methodology: “Mr. Kuo meticulously dissects indie rock and hip-hop records and shows and then transforms the data into complicated, brightly colored charts and diagrams.” It’s a visual piss-take on ADD internet surfers. So, to put Kuo to [...]

Prince reunites with Wendy & Lisa for Planet Earth
June 12th, 2007 · No Comments
Not sure what’s up with Prince’s globalistic, thematically titled new record, but the promising news is that former proteges, Wendy & Lisa, who were also illustrious members of the long-missed Revolution, appear alongside Prince for the first time on record since Parade in 1986.
Prince has recently signed with Columbia to distribute Planet Earth, which is [...]

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett replace Gorillaz with Chinese monkey opera
June 12th, 2007 · No Comments
While Albarn has all but proclaimed Gorillaz dead, he and Hewlett have been hard at work on their next venture- an ancient Chinese folk tale in the form of an opera. The pair is very much aware of the difficulty selling such an idea to the masses, as Hewlett explains:
“People are scared of operas, especially [...]

FTC investigates Burn Lounge as a Pyramid scheme
June 12th, 2007 · 2 Comments
Well, no shit. And, of course, Columbia, SC boasts the largest contingent of suckers in the country. Here’s a rundown on how it all works. You’d have to be pretty daft not to see it’s a thinly veiled cross between iTunes and Amway.

Enjoy The National with any mildly invasive outpatient procedure
June 11th, 2007 · 1 Comment
I had an endoscopy today, which is a fun little procedure wherein a GI specialist jams a robot camera down your throat, into your stomach, and, if you’re lucky like I was, way down into the nethers of your small intestine. That’s not the interesting part, though. When I was lying on the table with [...]

Morrissey chooses final resting place
June 11th, 2007 · No Comments
A few tufts of gray hair and Morrissey is already grave shopping? Perhaps, it’s just to prove that his penchant for melodrama is alive and well, even though you might not be able to tell from his latest record.
