With all the hoopla over the re-release of Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation, you’d think the band would have a new record ready (despite last year’s Rather Ripped being far underrated). Sonic Youth has never really worked well in conjunction with the corporate machine, so it’s not really surprising that there’s no new record to promote. But, come September guitarist Thurston Moore will release Trees Outside the Academy, his first proper solo record since 1995’s Psychic Hearts, which will feature twelve new, mostly acoustic songs recorded at J Mascis’ Bisquiteen studio. Moore worked with Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley and violinist Samara Lubelski. From what I can tell, it will likely be more straightforward than his collaborative works over the years outside Sonic Youth.
