Like Cat Power, it’s not so much about the music as it is the voice for Leslie Feist. She has a voice that makes you pay attention. She can pull off simple, saccharine lines like “we could hold each other tight tonight” (“So Sorry”) simply because her inflection makes it mean so much more than [...]

Joy Division biopic, ‘Control’, preview
May 26th, 2007 · 1 Comment
Even better than the stills, the preview looks very well done. I am officially excited to see this film. The fellow playing Ian Curtis doesn’t seem cheesy at all. And Anton Corbijn looks to have done an astounding job in capturing the scene without resorting to cliche.

When Jack on Lost is wasted he rocks out to Nirvana
May 26th, 2007 · No Comments
Last night on the Lost finale, Jack was cruising around stoned out of his mind on Oxycodone, sporting a scruffy bear, some mirrored aviators, and listening to Nirvana’s “Scentless Apprentice.”

UPDATE: Debbie Harry to duet with Lily Allen on Today Show, Friday
May 24th, 2007 · No Comments
Here’s the video:
When I saw Lily Allen back in March in Atlanta she did an acoustic version of “Heart of Glass” as one of her encores. She actually did a bunch of covers because she only has one record (The Kooks, Keane), but this one in particular was amazing. She [...]

Massive punk zine archive
May 24th, 2007 · No Comments
This is an astounding collection of pdf scans of complete issues of Maximumrocknroll, Flipside, HeartattaCk and Suburban Voice dating back to the late 1970’s. These guys clearly love their punk rock in the most obsessive and anal way. All of the zines are out of print and free. So, no more paying ridiculous prices for [...]

The Strokes to rest on laurels for remainder of year
May 24th, 2007 · 1 Comment
If anybody needs a vacation, it’s The Strokes. Man, those guys churn out some records. I mean, since 2001 they’ve put out three complete LP’s- none of that EP slackness. That’s an average of one record for every two years that have passed, which is no small feat in today’s competitive marketplace. And it’s not [...]

RETRO: Ultra Vivid Scene “Mercy Seat” video
May 23rd, 2007 · 2 Comments
I always wondered what happened to Kurt Ralske. According to AMG, he dropped off the face of the planet after 1992’s Rev, only to resurface again as a producer for Lloyd Cole and Ivy a few years later. In 1999, he put out a record called Amorphous under the name [...]

Japanese bonus track off Mirrored. Sort of a difficult drone- it’s unlike anything else on the LP.

Queens of the Stone Age Era Vulgaris preview site, “Sick Sick Sick” video
May 23rd, 2007 · No Comments
QOTSA has launched a mini-site to preview it’s new record, Era Vulgaris, due out June 12. The site streams a few new tracks and has a game to gain exclusive content. Everything I’ve heard so far sounds pretty rocking (like the first single, “Sick Sick Sick”), but I do miss [...]
New Lily Allen video, “Alfie”
May 23rd, 2007 · No Comments
Despite her recent mini-breakdown, I still can’t help but love Lily. This song is about her pot-smoking, slack-ass brother, Alfie.

Copeland wants Police to renege on reunion rules
May 23rd, 2007 · No Comments
Police drummer Stewart Copeland told Billboard that he wants to bend the reunion rules the band agreed upon for its tour, only for its headlining Bonnaroo show. The rules, as I understand them, ban additional musicians and back-up singers, which I applaud. Why Copeland wants to break them for Bonnaroo is a mystery. Does he [...]

Tom Waits, Philip Glass on Healing the Divide benefit disc
May 23rd, 2007 · No Comments
Billboard reports that the Anti- label is putting out a benefit CD/DVD for Healing the Divide’s Tibetan Health Initiative, featuring Tom Waits, Philip Glass, and Anoushka Shankar. The concert was held back in 2003 at New York’s Avery Fisher Hall. Waits played with Greg Cohen and the Kronos Quartet, and he makes up the bulk [...]

The Jesus and Mary Chain on The Late Show with David Letterman 05.21.2007
May 23rd, 2007 · No Comments
William Reid looks like he and Robert Smith have been dining at the very same all you can eat buffet. They also seem to share a penchant for sporting jerseys to cover the girth. Alas, the brothers Reid look as bored as they always have. The new song is just [...]

Battles provides reference guide to Mirrored
May 22nd, 2007 · No Comments
Asked by Guardian Unlimited to pony up the secret decoder for what makes its debut, Mirrored, tick, Battles throws out ten reference points, which predictably range from the obscure to the amusing to the nonsensical. Among them:
The art of neo raunch
“If there was ever an example of what the music of Battles “looks” like, it [...]

RETRO: Klaus Nomi "Total Eclipse" live from ‘Urgh! A Music War’
May 22nd, 2007 · 3 Comments
My roommate in college had ‘Urgh! A Music War’ on VHS (and vinyl). Someone desperately needs to release it on DVD. We used to sit around and watch it constantly. So many amazing performances of punk rock, new wave, and post-punk acts from The Police to The Fleshtones to Gang [...]

Outkast alluding to new record with awful food analogies
May 22nd, 2007 · No Comments
I hate it when people describe music in terms of food with all the musical “ingredients” and a “dash” of this or that nonsense. It’s lazy and lame. And sometimes even creative writers like Andre 3000 stoop to the cliche. MTV News recently spoke with the more flamboyant half of Outkast with a headline [...]

The Jesus Lizard’s David Yow returns with Qui
May 22nd, 2007 · 1 Comment
David Yow singing three part harmonies? Well, I doubt it sounds like a barbershop quartet. First of all, it’s David Yow, ex-leader of The Jesus Lizard, which guarantees nothing close to normal. And, secondly, the forthcoming Qui album is on Ipecac, which also guarantees weirdness. Yow joined Qui after hanging out like a creepy old [...]

The Maccabees "Precious Time" video, album out tomorrow, tour with Bloc Party
May 21st, 2007 · No Comments
Brighton’s The Maccabees are a British band worthy of the hype. Their off-kilter pop is a tight-lipped amalgamation of Blur, Wire, and XTC , which uncoils a controlled urgency with staccato melodies that don’t take too many listens to sink in. The band’s debut, Colour It In, comes out tomorrow [...]

Beastie Boy Adrock talks to Seattle’s The Stranger
May 21st, 2007 · No Comments
With a new, all-instrumental album, The Mix-Up, due out June 26, the Beastie Boys are returning a little more low-key than usual. King Adrock has an amusing back and forth with The Stranger’s Jonathan Zwickel.
Adrock on selling out:
“I don’t think that people buying records or whatever really give a shit if you make money or [...]
