Austin’s Peel definitely does sound like its members own more than a few Pavement records, while keeping at least one foot in the twee camp at all times. High-pitched keyboards trace undefinable shapes over scuzzy garage-rock guitars and borderline monotone vocals. This is not a bad thing, as the slack indie rock sound of the mid 90’s seems to have been long tossed aside for re-processed new wave. In a weirdly inverted retro nostalgic kind of way, this is actually refreshing.
