Riding the crashing wave down from the dregs of the shoegaze movement, Chapterhouse had one fluke hit with “Pearl” in 1991 off its debut Whirpool. It was a dance-infused send up of the heavily mimicked My Bloody Valentine template, replete with breathy vocals, shimmering, overly effects-laden guitars and a John Bonham-sampled backbeat. I don’t recall thinking the video was quite so lame, but it’s embarrassingly indulgent. The song is still utterly infectious, though.

    Great song!
I remember this song being in heavy rotation up at WUSC.
